I just read the most incredible book I believe i have ever read. Columbine by Dave Cullen.

I grew up in Littleton, graduating from Columbine’s sister-school, Chatfield, in 1991. My brother, Kurt, Graduated from Columbine.

I remember where I was when I heard about the shootings. I was at 4717 Grand Ave, in Kansas City, KS (The Plaza) in my office working. (Sprint) I fired up CNN’s live video, and watched it the entire day. I was mesmerized.

At one point, I even saw someone I knew looking for their daughter. It was Jim Urban, who I had lived with for a short while after leaving home. He was looking for his daughter, Bethany. Since she was not one of those killed, I can only assume he found her, but seeing him made it all the more real for me.

For some reason that event really affected me. I didn’t know anyone who was killed or injured, but I felt like I did. I felt like I should have.

Now I have kids of my own in high school, and that scares me even more. It’s easy, while reading the book, to see where the parents could have prevented this, but it makes me wonder…am I missing something with my own kids?

It was good to read the book and learn the truth. The media coverage only fed the myths.

Easily the most difficult-to-read book I’ve ever read. And the best.
